Why Does My MP3 Player Start Making a Shrieking Sound, Then Freeze Up My Computer When I Try to Use It?

I cannot get the usb set up to work to download anything to my . I admit I'm seriously tech-challenged, but I can't get it to do anything but make this horrible noise, then the computer freezes up, and has to be completely turned off and rebooted. Please help! Thank you!
